Who will save the world?

The Church is God’s plan to save the world!  That is a grand statement, isn’t it? And better yet, it is true!  The Church is entrusted with the Gospel of Christ and the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that she can go and make a difference – now and eternally.  
Paul tells us that God planned the Church to demonstrate what Christ’s Gospel could do to make a new society, not built on human accomplishments or personality, but on the Spirit’s power: "this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Ephesians 3:8-12, NIV)  Think about that!  When the church is healthy, even the angels are impressed.
Churches come in all sizes – a dozen people gathering in a storefront chapel to thousands thronging a cathedral sized edifice.  Local congregations feed the hungry, teach new disciples, provide a place of safe harbor for those who are hurting, give to support the work of spreading the Message, gather for prayer, and offer up worship. While you would not know it in some congregations, a high level battle goes on around the church all the time – evil fighting with good, light overcoming darkness, love defeating hate, death replaced with life!  Those who only think of the church as a “Sunday club,” a social gathering of like-minded people, have yet to catch a glimpse of her true mission!
Perhaps my greatest privilege in life is to be part of Faith Discovery Church. She is not a large church, nor is she rich, but the breadth of her reach is amazing. On any given week, she is touching hundreds of people- feeding families, providing education to children in her Christian school, inviting people to experience the Presence of God in worship, reaching into local prisons with hope, training boys and girls in faith, and counseling the confused, holding out the Gospel of salvation to those who are lost- just to mention a few things. It is not a large professional staff that is doing this work. A volunteer network that includes dozens of faithful men and women makes this possible.
So, I am going to get personal here. Are you part of a local congregation? If not, why not?  Please do not tell me about the hypocrites, the failed pastors, the misplaced priorities.  All those things may be true. After all , the church is made of people, imperfect, failing people – just like you; just like me.  It is a place to grow, to heal, to become.  If it is doing what God intends, it will be a messy place, full of people at all stages of spiritual development, from infancy to maturity. 
The church is the place where God will most effectively use you in His work, the place where the gifts of the Spirit He’s invested in you are brought to full fruitfulness and matured. "The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t." (1 Corinthians 12:25, The Message) Christians cannot fully function as God intends without being ‘in the Body.’  Those Christians who dismiss the church as irrelevant or unnecessary ignore what the Bible teaches, and not without real consequence for themselves and others.

People criticize their church - sometimes reasonably, often unfairly. Some churches do ‘church’ better than others. But, a person who works towards the destruction of a church, does an awful thing. He is attacking what God loves! The Church, which includes local congregations, is His Bride.  The Word says that “Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness.” If Jesus gives His church such love, how can we so easily attack, criticize, dismiss, and destroy her?

The best church is not a “Me” church.  It is “His Church” where “We” always takes priority. The moment any person – be it those in the pews or the one in the pulpit - says, “I’ll have my way here,” the Enemy of God steps in to fan the flames! Abusive shepherds who are more intent on building their kingdom than His, will destroy the people of God.  How sobering! Christians who believe that their church exists to make them happy will fight, squabble, and destroy the work of God. All of us must be reminded - The Church belongs to God, to serve His purposes.

Church – let’s love her. Let’s give ourselves to make her great, for Christ’s sake.  Let’s raise our level of commitment to her, allowing nothing to become more important than being part of God’s work to reach the world. Let’s pray for her success. Let’s be the place where the Light of Christ shines brightly in a very dark world.
The word from the Word says that “Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing a her by the washing with water through the word,  27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.” (Ephesians 5:25)   And this, "Come to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by the people, but he is precious to God who chose him. And now God is building you, as living stones, into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are God’s holy priests, who offer the spiritual sacrifices that please him because of Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:4-5, NLT)

Do I Need A Miracle Moment?



She talked to me about her struggles and I heard about struggles through many years that had taken a terrible toll. Hers was an ugly story of broken relationships, addiction, and misery.  I heard about people who had done some awful things to her and about choices in life that were sinful as well as destructive. It is hard to admit, but part of me did not want to feel compassion!  I was tempted by judgment.

Why? Because, compassion requires something from me.  The easier way is to distance myself from her: “She created the mess; she will have to climb out of it.”  The Spirit whispered as I wrestled with my temptation asking me, “Did Jesus walk away from you when you made a mess of your life? Who gave you time, grace, and love when you  needed it?”  Compassion won.

So, why did I feel that temptation? What is the answer?  Life is complex and simple answers to the questions that swirl in us and around us are seldom right. Tangled knots of multiple causes bring us to this moment- good or bad. Finding wholeness, for ourselves and others, requires time, thought, and the intervention of God, the Holy Spirit.  “I got saved!” is a wonderful expression. Experiencing forgiveness and the new birth that Jesus gives is an amazing thing.  But, the crisis of conversion must be followed by the process of discipleship in which we deal with our brokenness with patience, untangling those knots with steady pursuit of the will of God.  Christianity in America is plagued by the demand for quick solutions, instant changes, and effortless discipleship.

As much as we love the miracle moments celebrated movies or books, we must not forget the process that preceded the ‘miracle.’  Consider this –

·         Marriages are not saved by a single choice. A couple becomes deeply loving with daily choices to care, to share, to be unselfish. 
·         Sinful habits are not broken with one prayer. They are overcome with honest confession,  adopting new truth, and ongoing submission to the will of God. 
·         Beautiful Christian lives are like great works of art, created over time by the Master Artist, as we, His canvas, allow Him to work in us. "For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." (Ephesians 2:10, NLT)

Christian as you look over your own life do see things that are not as you want them to be?
Do you see gaps between what you profess to believe and how you actually live?
Do you want a miracle moment instead of a discipleship process?

You are not unique in this!  We all experience unanticipated consequences of choices made in the past. Paul teaches us about two natures that struggle for mastery in each of us. The “flesh” or “sinful nature” in which we were born pulls us toward satisfying ourselves with things of the moment, gifts good in their proper place, but not meant to be served as ultimate ends. The spiritual nature, made alive by the Spirit when we come to Christ as Savior, lifts us to seek God, to pursue the kind of life that has value. "Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." (Romans 8:5, NIV)  "Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." (Romans 8:8-9, NIV)

Grow in grace. Mature in the Way. Deepen in understanding. 

Here is the word from the Word. "Christ (will) dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." (Ephesians 3:17-21, NIV)

Like Vultures Around A Carcass

It’s called the “Blessed Hope” for Christian and it’s not about winning the lottery or taking a long vacation, but you knew that, right?  From where I stand, it appears that with regard to the coming of the Lord, most Christians tend to live at the extremes. Some are completely taken up with Rapture theories and End Time speculation. Others forget it completely, taken up with life here, as if the world will go on forever. With a wry smile I reflect on my own dance ‘round this doctrine. In my youth, I was (as were many) in the grip of Rapture fever, influenced by the likes of Hal Lindsay and “The Late Great Planet Earth.”   By the time I reached my third decade of life, the hope of Christ’s Return slipped into the background, my life filled up with kids, work, and ministry.
Now in my sixth decade, I read passages like Matthew 24 with renewed interest. Paul's encouragement has new-found significance for me as I read that the “the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. So comfort and encourage each other with these words." (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, NLT)  It is a real blessed hope to know that the Lord plans to restore the Kingdom, bring justice, and make all things new!  So, I pray, “Come, Lord Jesus.”
Jesus told us that there would be those who profess insider knowledge and special revelation about His coming in every generation. He warned that people would gather around these ‘prophets’ like vultures round a dead carcass! "So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather." (Matthew 24:26-28, NIV)  When He returns, there won’t be any doubt about it.  His Presence will be as visible as a broad stroke of lightning.  His words also caution us about making the events of a world marked by sin – war, ‘natural’ disasters, and famines – into special signs.  In fact, these things, He says, “When reports come in of wars and rumored wars, keep your head and don’t panic. This is routine history; this is no sign of the end.” (Matthew 24:6, The Message)
Whatever generation we live in, be it the last or not, there are words we need to hear with ready response: "And many false prophets will appear and will lead many people astray. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But those who endure to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then, finally, the end will come." (Matthew 24:11-14, NLT)  Without the constant awareness of Eternity – whether we enter it by the Return of Christ or our death – we will slip into a spiritual coma, taken up with things that matter so little, forgetting the reality that is unseen except with spiritual eyes.
Pray for insight as you read this parable that Jesus told. "And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come." (Luke 19:11-13, KJV)   He told of three servants who received a trust from their lord while he was away.  Two were faithful and used the investments wisely for the benefit of their lord. Each was rewarded with a commendation- “You are a trustworthy servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you.”   One set the investment to the side and carried on with his life.  He was rebuked with startling words – “You wicked servant!”  Take the phrase “Occupy ‘til I come!” and make it your goal. 
The world needs Christians filled with the Blessed Hope.  With the assurance of His return and our salvation, we will work to bring the Gospel to those who live in darkness, we will love those who are broken by sin and slaves to their appetites.  We will remain steady in the face of foolishness, faddishness, and fabulists!  “Occupy ‘til I come!” Jesus said.  So, let’s do it.
